So, there are two types of frustrations in ones life, pre-employment frustration and post-employment frustration. When you don’t have a job, you are desperately trying to search for one to pay your bills. In the process you are also looking for a way to make your life dull and miserable. Once you have a job, you may feel you will be spared from frustration. Well yes, perhaps until you get your first paycheck, but everything starts seeming dull and monotonous right after. In a few months down the road you start complaining about having no life! You feel you need a break to contemplate and re-think about your decisions. Or, you decide to withstand the aggression and the brutality at work and carve out a niche for yourself—you want to become the leader, the achiever, and be successful—in brief become an a-hole!

Welcome to the world of a-holicism! The journey from knowing what you want and getting what you want is a-holicism. Wonder who are these people? Well these species have the following traits:

  •  Bully
  • Egocentric
  • Arrogant
  • Despicable
  • Risk taker
  • Ambitious
  • Tough skin
  • Insensitive
  • Severe
  • Exacting
  • Ruthless
  • Ravenous for power
  • Great at backstabbing

How do you see yourself? Are you the a-hole or the nice guy? What are the vices and virtues of being an a-hole?

Before you say anything about your manager lets take a look at what forced him to become an a-hole:

Wondering how to become an a-hole? Here are 5 easy steps you can follow

You may consider becoming an a-hole just because, chicks like them!

Post docs, lend me your ears!

Do you fail to realize why you have to do all the work of your advisor but he makes all the money and gets famous? Don’t you feel you have had enough? You bring work home everyday and spend almost every weekend within the four walls of your lab. You hardly spend any time with your friends and family, and you have no time to relax. Your supervisor is a slave driver who checks on you at wee hours in the morning or late at night. If you are not available to talk to him then he threatens to get rid of you?

It is time for all you post docs out there to stand up for yourself and address your concerns!

Let’s beat the stress!

Stress and frustration go hand in hand. I guess a person who is stressed is more vulnerable to feeling frustrated or being emotionally sensitive to things which can otherwise affect him less. April is the stress awareness month and today is the National Stress Awareness Day. I sincerely hope you all have been able to set aside at least 10- 15 minutes for yourself to unwind and relax. Let me know how you spent your “me time”.

Here are some tips for making today a less stressful day, hope you enjoy it!

If anyone reading this is unemployed, focus on points 2, 5 and 7!

Finally always focus on the good and on things that you can control!

Stop stressing and start living!

Facebook frustrations

How do you feel when your friends post pictures with big smiles and grandiose comments on Facebook? Research at a couple of German universities have shown that one out of every three Facebook users leave the website feeling envious, jealous and frustrated.  Are you one of them?

Here is what frustrates me about Facebook:

  • Receiving friend requests from relatives who I have not seen in the past 20 years and who are as old as my parents
  • Friends deliberately ridiculing my current status e.g. “How is your post doc going”? Or, “I heard you got married, is that true”?
  • Looking at the blowhard comments of my friends, some of which are listed below:
  • “As all ways Marriott is treating me like a King”!!! –from an acquaintance who visited Mariott for perhaps the second time.
  • “I am getting to spend so much time with myself, I am afraid I might fall in love with ME ;P”- someone who has come to the US for a post doc!
  • “If attending weddings, receptions, birthdays, casual invitations and other such social appearances had a remuneration attached to it then I would have become a billionaire by now”!!- whatever this is supposed to mean, what surprises me is that it has 14 likes…brrrr
  • “10 hours of Shopping started from 4 am across 5th Avenue, 15 hours of sleep!!!!!!! What a ‘Black Friday’ Celebration”- again I have no clue what this means, LOL
  • “Signed the offer acceptance form for my second postdoc”. “First day of my second postdoc”!- wow what an achievement—congratulations dude!
  • “I won the Photocontest (People Category) organized by McBain Camera for their Photographic Tradeshow, 2011.According to the McBain website Winning entries will be printed and displayed at the XYZ Photographic Trade Show on October 30, 2011″.Super happy!!!!:)” — am really happy for you too!
  • “Yay, what a nice surprise (a scholarship that I didn’t even apply for!) and that also day before B’day”!- really? this is surely unbelievable!
  • “F*** … I can’t believe this … I got invited for the second time to publish by a high impact factor journal for the second time within a month! I think I am going to choke !!! Yahoooooooooooooooooo … I am on the top of the world”— Mama Mia!

and the list continues……

I guess in the hindsight I keep going back to Facebook just to have a laugh over some of these larger than life comments of my friends…I love you Facebook, thanks for keeping me connected with all the fun!

What makes you feel angry when you look at your Facebook homepage, and how do you cope with this? Have you almost stopped using Facebook to stay away from the annoying posts? Is Facebook making you socially isolated and depressed instead of helping you network with your friends?

Let’s hear out the “Black Mamba”!

Kobe Bryant vented anger and frustration on Facebook following the injury and the recent surgery of his Achilles tendon. This injury may keep him sidelined from basketball for the next nine months.

Here is what he vented,

“This is such BS! All the training and sacrifice just flew out the window with one step that I’ve done millions of times! The frustration is unbearable. The anger is rage. Why the hell did this happen ?!? Makes no damn sense. Now I’m supposed to come back from this and be the same player Or better at 35?!? How in the world am I supposed to do that?? I have NO CLUE. Do I have the consistent will to overcome this thing? Maybe I should break out the rocking chair and reminisce on the career that was. Maybe this is how my book ends. Maybe Father Time has defeated me…Then again maybe not! It’s 3:30am, my foot feels like dead weight, my head is spinning from the pain meds and I’m wide awake”.

Black MambaThis is the part I liked the most!

“Forgive my Venting but what’s the purpose of social media if I won’t bring it to you Real No Image?? Feels good to vent, let it out. To feel as if THIS is the WORST thing EVER! Because After ALL the venting, a real perspective sets in. There are far greater issues/challenges in the world then a torn Achilles. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, find the silver lining and get to work with the same belief, same drive and same conviction as ever”.

“One day, the beginning of a new career journey will commence. Today is NOT that day. “If you see me in a fight with a bear, prey for the bear.” I’ve always loved that quote. That’s “mamba mentality” – we don’t quit, we don’t cower, we don’t run. We endure and conquer. I know it’s a long post but I’m Facebook Venting LOL. Maybe now I can actually get some sleep and be excited for surgery tomorrow. First step of a new challenge. Guess I will be Coach Vino the rest of this season. I have faith in my teammates. They will come thru. Thank you for all your prayers and support.

Much Love Always.

Mamba Out”.

How have you decided to deal with your frustration? Just like Mamba says, “Stop feeling sorry for yourself, find the silver lining and get to work with the same belief, same drive and same conviction as ever”. How can you turn your frustration into an accomplishment? Give voice to your frustration! I would like to hear from you!!
